Making an author credential verifiable, not just stated
The question: your author claims a relevant degree or license — is that claim checkable by a machine and a human, or does it dead-end at an unsupported sentence in a bio?
A stated credential and a verifiable credential are different trust objects. The QRG's emphasis on expertise for YMYL content rewards the latter. The verification chain, link by link:
— Name the specific credential, not a vague status. "Board-certified in dermatology" beats "medical expert."
— Link to the issuing authority's public registry where the credential can be confirmed (a licensing board lookup, a university directory, a professional body's member search).
— Ensure the name on the registry matches the byline string exactly, so the resolution doesn't fail on a mismatch.
— Add the credential to the author's Person schema where an appropriate property exists, and reflect it on the canonical author page.
— Where the credential body issues a verifiable digital credential, link it.
The principle: lower the cost of verification to near zero. A rater or system that can confirm the claim in one click treats it differently from one that cannot confirm it at all.
Caveat: verifiability is not a ranking guarantee. The QRG uses credentials as evidence of expertise, but formal credentials are not always required — for some topics, demonstrated everyday expertise (the patient who manages a condition) is explicitly acceptable. A verification chain matters most precisely where formal expertise is expected.
What we still don't know: whether any current ranking system parses credential registries, or whether this remains a human-rater and reputation-corroboration signal that reaches algorithms only through training data.
