Decision rule: does this belong short or long
Not every idea shrinks. Forcing a long idea into a short format produces something confidently wrong, which is worse than something unpublished.
Go short if:
— It has one claim and one supporting reason.
— It can be demonstrated rather than argued.
— The value is recognition — "oh, that is what I have been doing wrong".
— Someone could act on it today without needing more information.
Go long if:
— It needs setup before the claim makes sense.
— The interesting part is the exception, the trade-off, or the "it depends".
— You would have to strip caveats that change the answer.
— It is a process with branching decisions.
For the middle case: build the short around the single most surprising piece, and let the long version carry the reasoning. Do not tease. Give the short a complete thought of its own, or people learn your shorts are adverts.
Short form is a whole idea, small. Not a big idea, truncated.
