Checklist: stress-testing builder lock-in before you commit a client
Deactivate the builder and see what's left — that's your real exit cost.
— Build a sample page, then deactivate the plugin: count shortcode soup vs clean HTML left behind.
— Gutenberg leaves valid HTML comments; Elementor/Divi leave [shortcode] rubble.
— Check if content is stored in post_content or in plugin meta tables (meta = harder export).
— Test one full theme switch to confirm headers/footers survive.
Pros:
— Reveals the true cost of leaving in 30 minutes.
— Saves clients from a stranded-content trap.
Cons:
— Doesn't quantify the rebuild hours, only the mess.
Best for: long-term sites where you might switch builders or themes in 2-3 years.
