Dedicated Image Sitemap vs Inline Image Tags: When Each Pays Off

Dedicated Image Sitemap vs Inline Image Tags: When Each Pays Off

Two ways to declare images. They are not equivalent.

Inline (image:image inside the page's URL entry) when:
— Images live on the same domain as the page.
— Standard product/article photos already in the HTML.
— You want Google to tie image ↔ page automatically.

Separate image sitemap file when:
— Images are loaded via JavaScript and not in raw HTML.
— Image host differs from page host (CDN subdomain).
— You have a large media library worth its own coverage report.

Hard limit either way: ✅ max 1,000 image entries per URL.

Pass/fail:
— ✅ Only images you want in Google Images are listed.
— ❌ Tracking pixels, spacers, and icons must not appear.

Definition of done: every listed image returns 200, is crawlable in robots.txt, and belongs to that page's content.
