Forty-one versions of one phone number
Meet a plumber in Phoenix stuck at position seven for two years. Solid business, 18 trucks, going nowhere on the map.
We ran a citation audit and found the rot. His old number lived on 41 directories. His suite number appeared three different ways. One listing still had the address from 2016.
The cleanup playbook:
— Export every citation from an aggregator scan
— Pick ONE canonical version of name, address, phone — copy it exactly from the Google Business Profile
— Fix the big four first: Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Data Axle (these feed everything else)
— Hunt duplicate listings and request merges, don't just edit
— Kill the dead 2016 listings entirely
We fixed 41 entries over nine days. Then we waited.
Nothing. Three weeks of flat rankings while Google re-crawled.
Week five he moved to position three. The trust signal finally lined up. Calls up 40 a month.
The lesson: Google doesn't reward perfect citations, it punishes contradictory ones. Consistency beats volume every time.
