sameAs identity links vs. unlinked brand mentions for entity trust
The question: to cement an entity in the knowledge layer, what does more — explicit sameAs identity links (to Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Crunchbase) or unlinked mentions of the entity across the web?
These feed entity understanding through different doors. sameAs is an explicit machine assertion of identity equivalence — useful for disambiguation and for connecting your entity to known nodes. Unlinked mentions are the implicit, distributed signal of notability: being talked about, named in context, co-occurring with related entities. Google's entity-recognition patents describe inferring entities from co-occurrence and context, not solely from declared links.
The tradeoff is control versus credibility. sameAs is fully under your control, which is exactly why it is weak as a trust signal — you are vouching for yourself. Unlinked mentions are outside your control, which is why they corroborate. A wall of sameAs links to your own profiles asserts identity but proves no notability; being mentioned unprompted across credible sources proves you matter.
The synthesis: use sameAs to disambiguate and connect to authoritative nodes; rely on earned unlinked mentions to establish that the entity is worth recognizing at all.
Caveat: the role of unlinked mentions in ranking is inferred from patents and from how generative engines surface entities, not from confirmed live weighting.
What we still don't know: how current systems weight self-declared sameAs against earned co-occurrence when resolving and trusting a lesser-known entity.
