The squint test: validating a Shorts thumbnail in 4 checks
Shorts thumbnails matter on your channel grid and search. Run this before publishing.
— Shrink the image to 120px wide — if you can't read it, the text is too long (max 3 words)
— Squint at it: one clear subject, one clear emotion, or it's noise
— Check contrast — light subject on dark, or add a 4px stroke
— Open it next to your last 6 thumbnails — does it look same-y? Vary the color
Tools: Canva free tier covers 90% of this; Photopea (free) if you need real layers.
Verdict: a clean face + 2 words beats a cluttered 'designed' one. Skip paid thumbnail AI for Shorts — the grid is too small to reward detail. Not for over-designers.
