Q: Before a deploy I just silence the monitor. Is that fine?
A: It works until the day you forget to un-silence it — and a muted monitor is invisible, so a real outage right after deploy goes completely unnoticed. Manual muting has no memory and no end time.
A scheduled maintenance window is the safer tool: it suppresses alerts for a defined block, then automatically re-enables them. No reliance on you remembering. Most services also keep recording data during the window, so your uptime stats aren't unfairly dinged by planned work — and you still get a history of what happened.
Use maintenance windows for anything planned; reserve manual mute for genuine surprises, and set a timer the moment you do it. The upgrade: keep one independent external check live even during the window, so a deploy that takes the whole site down still reaches you.
