The free tool that couldn't remember
It was a Wednesday when a snack brand tried to prove a packaging redesign improved sentiment. The free, real-time search tool showed only the last 30 days, so the "before" simply didn't exist. They were arguing about a trend with half the line missing.
They paid for one historical pull: 18 months back. The picture changed entirely. Sentiment hadn't improved from the redesign; it had recovered from a supply shortage that ended the same week. The redesign got credit it didn't earn.
The historical query cost a few hundred dollars, one time. The wrong conclusion would have justified a six-figure rollout.
The takeaway: real-time tools are blind to the past, and most decisions are comparisons against it. For the daily pulse, free and current is fine. For any "did it work" question, you need the memory you have to pay for.
