One-off course vs ongoing membership community: comparing revenue shape

Selling a fixed course versus running a recurring community produces different revenue curves from the same expertise.

Context: a course is a high-ticket one-time sale; a membership is lower-ticket recurring revenue with ongoing delivery obligations.

Findings: creator-education reporting through 2024 suggests courses generate large launch spikes followed by decay, while memberships build slower but produce smoother, compounding monthly revenue — at the cost of perpetual content and moderation labor. Courses front-load cash; memberships front-load work and back-load stability.

Caveats: most figures come from creators selling 'how to sell courses,' a population with obvious incentive to inflate; survivorship bias is severe.

Implication: courses suit creators wanting lump-sum income and low ongoing commitment; memberships suit those who can sustain delivery and want predictable revenue. The labor profile, not just the money, should drive the choice.

What we still don't know: long-run membership churn for creator communities specifically — the variable that decides whether the recurring model actually beats a course over years.
