Mistake: reading the Crawl Stats graph like a heart monitor
A drop in crawl requests appears in Search Console, and panic sets in — "Google is abandoning us, budget collapsed."
No. Crawl volume going down often means Google got efficient. It learned your site changes slowly, so it stopped hammering pages that never update. That's a compliment, not a crisis. Crawl rate tracks demand and your server's response, not your ranking.
The real failure mode is misreading the chart and "fixing" a non-problem — forcing crawls, spamming sitemaps, bloating URLs.
The fix: only act on crawl stats when you see actual symptoms — new pages not getting indexed, a spike in fetch errors, response time climbing.
Fewer crawls on a stable site is the system working. Stop pathologizing efficiency.
