Your restructure left a redirect chain four hops long
Client reorganized three times in two years. URL went A→B→C→D→final. Each hop bled a little link juice and slowed crawl. Some old links pointed at A and barely passed anything.
What I did:
— exported all redirects, traced every chain to its endpoint
— rewrote each rule to point straight at the final URL
— A now goes directly to final, one 301, done
Google follows up to ~5 hops then gives up, and each hop dilutes. Collapse chains to single hops after any restructure.
Watch for loops — a careless rewrite turns A→D and D→A into an infinite bounce. Test the chain before deploy.
