File-level grabs your data fast and restores granularly. But when the whole box dies, you're reinstalling the OS, repackaging dependencies, reconfiguring nginx by hand for six hours.
Image/bare-metal backups boot the entire machine back in minutes.
— File-level: fast, granular, no disaster recovery
— Image: slow to take, restores the whole machine instantly
Run both. But if you only have files, you don't have a recovery time, you have a prayer. Change my mind.
