If your only internal links are in the menu, you don't have an internal linking strategy. You have a sitemap with a hover state.
Controversial but: navigation links are the weakest links you have. They're boilerplate, they repeat sitewide, they get discounted, and they only ever point to top-level pages. A site whose entire link graph is the main menu has a star topology — everything orbits the homepage and nothing connects laterally.
The fix: contextual in-body links between sibling pages. That's where topical authority gets built — a page on "keyword research" linking sideways to "search intent," not both just hanging off the nav.
What percentage of your internal links live inside body content versus nav and footer? Run the number.
