Hand-coded schema vs a schema plugin:
Tactic comparison. I marked up the same article both ways and tested in Rich Results.
Hand-coded JSON-LD
➕ Exact control; no bloat, no fields you don't need
➕ Free, and you actually understand what you shipped
➖ Easy to typo a property; you maintain it as schema.org evolves
Plugin (Rank Math / Yoast / Schema App)
➕ Auto-populates from page data; updates as standards shift
➕ Bulk apply across thousands of pages instantly
➖ Often outputs unused properties + duplicate graphs that confuse validators
Best for: a few high-value templates → hand-code. Thousands of programmatic pages → plugin.
Price-vs-value: I found duplicate Article+WebPage graphs from a plugin once — both validated, neither earned a rich result. Control wins at small scale; automation wins at scale.
Pick hand-coded for money pages. Skip plugins if you can't audit their output in the validator.
Tested live in Rich Results.
