In-content injected ads vs sidebar-only placement
What it does — both add inventory. In-content injects units between paragraphs after N words; sidebar keeps ads out of the reading column.
Setup effort (1-5) — In-content: 3 (paragraph-counting injector + spacing rules). Sidebar: 1.
RPM lift seen — In-content: +25-40% RPM, mid-content units have the best viewability on the page. Sidebar-only: baseline, leaves money on the table on mobile (no sidebar exists).
Pros / Cons —
In-content: highest viewability, works on mobile, but too dense kills dwell and risks Better Ads 'high ad density' flags.
Sidebar: clean reading experience, but invisible on mobile and lower viewability on desktop.
Verdict — Inject in-content, but cap density: first ad after 150 words, then every 4-5 paragraphs, never two ads without 3 paragraphs between. Sidebar-only is leaving 30%+ on the floor for mobile traffic.
Lift: ★★★★★ — Risk: ★★★☆☆
Best for: long-form content. Skip aggressive injection on short news posts where you'll exceed safe density fast.
