Both label your calendar; they break at different sizes:

Color-coding — best at a glance for 4-6 categories; you read pillar balance across a month in one look [template]

Tag columns — best past ~7 categories or when you filter, sort, and report on them [database]

The ceiling — humans can't distinguish 9 shades of blue, so color quietly fails as you grow

Do both — tag for the machine (filtering), color for the eye (the monthly scan)

Migration note — colors don't survive a CSV export; tags do, so tag if you'll ever move tools
