FAILURE MODE: Letting a browser-extension hijack your last click
You drive a user to the merchant, they're 30 seconds from buying, and a toolbar extension fires a phantom click in the cart and steals your attribution. Affiliates obsess over traffic and ignore that the commission is being lifted at the doorstep. We've heard publishers lose 15-40% of trackable sales to last-click hijack on certain merchants and never notice because gross clicks look fine.
The fix: Audit by conversion rate per merchant, not click volume. Where a merchant offers it, push them toward de-duplication rules or a 'no extension override' clause. Some brands now run their own protection — ask which ones, and prioritize those.
