The clever review funnel that nearly got a clinic banned

The clever review funnel that nearly got a clinic banned

Meet a physiotherapy clinic in Manchester. A consultant had built them a slick funnel: happy clients routed to Google, unhappy ones routed to a private feedback form. Reviews looked perfect.

That's review gating, and it violates Google's policy outright. It also produced a suspiciously flawless 5.0 that read fake to anyone scrolling — and to Google's own filters, which had started suppressing some of them.

We ripped out the gate. The new approach asked every client, full stop, with a simple direct link and no screening. Riskier on paper.

The first week brought a 3-star. The owner panicked.

But volume rose because the ask was now simple and universal, the rating settled at a believable 4.8, and Google stopped filtering them. A genuine mix actually reads more trustworthy than a wall of fives. Over four months reviews tripled and the clinic moved up two spots in the pack. Bookings followed.

The lesson: gating optimizes the average and risks a penalty; open requests optimize volume and trust. A realistic 4.8 with 90 reviews beats a fragile 5.0 with 20 — every time, with Google and with humans.
