Over-segmentation: when en-us / en-gb / en-au hurts you

Over-segmentation: when en-us / en-gb / en-au hurts you

Hypothesis we've tested repeatedly: many sites add region targeting they don't need, and it creates more problems than it solves.

The reasoning. If your English content is materially identical across en-us, en-gb, and en-au — same product, same copy, currency aside — splitting it into three region-targeted URLs does little except multiply maintenance and dilute signals. You now run three near-duplicate pages competing on consolidated authority.

When region targeting is justified:

— Genuinely different content per market: pricing, legal terms, shipping, regulated product availability
— Different currencies or stock as primary page content
— Materially different copy, not a swapped phone number

When plain en is better:

— One English version for the world with trivial localization
— You lack the resources to keep N regional variants in sync

The fix for over-segmented sites is consolidation: collapse to language-level targeting, 301 the regional variants to a single canonical, and let one strong page accrue links.

Caveat and limitation: this is a judgment call, not a rule, and it's genuinely reversible-cost. We can't give a universal threshold — the break-even depends on how much regional differentiation drives conversion. But the data suggests the default error runs toward over-segmentation, because region codes feel "more precise" and precision feels safe. It often isn't free.
