Self-hosted monitoring vs. a SaaS service — which should I run?

Q: I can run a free self-hosted monitor. Why pay for one?

A: The deciding question is: where does the monitor live? A self-hosted tool on the same server (or even same provider) as your site has a fatal flaw — when the datacenter goes down, your monitor goes down with it and can't alert you. You find out from customers.

Self-hosted is great for internal dashboards, monitoring a fleet from a separate location, and avoiding per-check fees at scale. SaaS wins on external vantage point, multi-region probes you don't maintain, and alerting infrastructure that survives your outage.

The pragmatic combo: self-hosted for deep internal metrics, plus a cheap external SaaS check on your homepage from outside your network. If you only run one, run the external one — independence beats features.
