Traffic dropped, so you disavowed. Wrong tool, wrong day.
The myth: a sudden ranking drop means toxic links, and a disavow is the emergency fix.
Actually, most drops are core updates, a content quality reassessment, an indexing glitch, or you nuking your own internal links in a redesign. Links are the least likely culprit and the slowest to act on.
Reality: disavow does nothing for an algorithmic core-update reshuffle. There's no link penalty to lift. You'll wait a month for a file that addressed a problem you never had.
The failure mode is reflexive disavowing as a panic ritual — doing something visible instead of diagnosing the actual cause.
The fix: check the date against known update timelines, check Search Console coverage, check what you changed on-site. Disavow is the last hypothesis, not the first.
Reality check: not every drop is a link drop.
