Your XML sitemap is hiding your orphan pages, not fixing them.
Hot take: a page that only exists in your sitemap is still an orphan. The sitemap tells Google the URL exists. It says nothing about whether the URL matters. No internal links pointing in means no internal PageRank flowing in, which means a crawl every six weeks and a permanent residency on page 4.
The fix: crawl your site, diff the crawl against your sitemap, and every URL in the gap gets at least three contextual internal links from relevant pages. Not footer links. Body links.
Still confusing "indexed" with "linked"? They are not the same thing and your traffic knows it.
