Everyone accepts the default rate like it's a law of physics. It's a starting bid.
A SaaS affiliate doing ~$3k/month on the standard 20% sent the affiliate manager a one-page case:
— 18-month retention on their referrals was 14 months vs the program's 9-month average — proof their traffic churned less.
— Their refund rate was 6% vs the program's 15%.
— Ask: 35% for being a below-average-cost, above-average-LTV partner.
Manager countered at 30% plus a 90-day exclusivity-free trial. Same traffic, same work, commission went $3,000 → $4,500/month.
The leverage wasn't volume — it was proving their customers were cheaper to keep and less likely to refund. Data the program already had but never rewards unprompted.
The default rate is for affiliates who don't read their own retention numbers. Read yours, then ask.
