"Watch the average-watch-time number — that's your retention"
The received wisdom: chase higher seconds-watched. Sensible-sounding, so nobody questions it.
Average watch time and completion rate measure different failures. A 40-second video at 15s average watch looks "fine" but is hemorrhaging at the end. A 9-second video at 8s average watch is nearly perfect. Raw seconds rewards length, not holding power.
What's true: completion rate (and rewatches) is the signal TikTok actually leans on for distribution, because it normalizes for duration. Use average watch time only to find where the drop happens via the retention graph — not as the score itself.
Watch time tells you the wound's location. Completion tells you if you're bleeding out.
