Q: My cluster targets 30 keyword variations of the same thing. Is that a real topic cluster?
Short answer: no — that's a keyword cluster wearing a topic cluster costume, and it caps your authority fast.
Thirty pages on "best running shoes for X" cover one entity from 30 angles. Search engines consolidate or cannibalize them, and you've demonstrated zero breadth. Real topical authority means covering the entities and subtopics a knowledgeable person would expect — for running shoes that's gait, pronation, drop, materials, injury, fit, not 30 keyword skins of "best."
In practice: map your topic against its entities, not its keyword variants. Pull the "related entities" from a few top-ranking competitors, list what a domain expert would cover, and fill the gaps. One strong page per subtopic beats 30 near-duplicates every time.
