Mistake: treating spintax as personalization
Spintax randomizes phrasing so each send looks unique to spam filters. It does nothing for the prospect — {Hey|Hi} {name}, {loved|enjoyed} your {post|article} is still a template, and recipients smell it.
The fix: use spintax only on greetings and connective tissue, and put real per-prospect data in the first line — a number, a hire, a launch. Tools like Clay or Smartlead's Lead Catcher fields let you inject scraped variables; spintax just shuffles your own words.
Pros / Cons:
— Pro: spintax genuinely helps avoid content fingerprinting at volume
— Pro: cheap, built into most senders
— Con: zero lift on reply rate
— Con: lazy operators use it as an excuse to skip research
Verdict: 3/5 as a filter trick, 0/5 as personalization. Different jobs.
Who it's for: teams who confused 'unique to Gmail' with 'relevant to the human.'
