Short-form creator funds vs ad revenue-share: a structural comparison

Short-form creator funds vs ad revenue-share: a structural comparison

Platforms have largely shifted short-form payouts from fixed 'funds' to ad revenue-share, and the two models reward very different behavior.

Context: the old fund pools paid from a fixed bucket divided by total qualifying views — meaning your rate fell as the platform grew. Revenue-share ties payout to actual ad revenue against your content.

Findings: reporting through 2024-2025 indicates fund-era Shorts RPMs sat around $0.01-0.06 per thousand views, while revenue-share lifted top-niche creators meaningfully higher, though still far below long-form RPMs.

Caveats: nearly all figures are anecdotal dashboard screenshots, geographically skewed, and the methodology platforms use to attribute ad revenue to short clips is opaque.

Implication: under a fund you compete against everyone for a fixed pie; under revenue-share you compete on monetizable audience. Niche and geography matter more now, raw views less.

What we still don't know: how revenue is actually attributed in a feed where ads run between, not within, clips.
