Color variants as separate URLs = duplicate content fight
Client had every shirt color as its own indexable URL. 8 colors, 8 near-identical pages competing against each other for the same term. Google picked one at random and it was never the right one.
The move:
— Picked one canonical variant URL (usually the bestseller or 'all colors' view)
— Every color variant
rel=canonical
to that master
— Variant switching handled by on-page JS / query param, not separate indexable paths
Consolidated 8 weak pages into 1 strong one. Stopped the internal cannibalization.
Exception: if a color has real standalone search volume ('red prom dress'), let that one stay indexed on its own. Most don't. Check the data before you blanket-canonicalize.
