Spotted a 30-site reciprocal cluster propping up a whole niche — until it didn't
Multiple profiles show the cross-stitch and a finance-blog cluster wove it tight. The link graph gave them away.
What we mapped:
— 30 sites in the same niche, each linking to roughly 20 of the others
— ~600 internal-to-cluster links forming a near-complete mesh, almost no outside endorsement
— every site DR45-55, suspiciously uniform
The outcome: the cluster collectively held mid rankings for two years, then a link-spam update recognized the closed-loop pattern and devalued the reciprocal links across all 30 at once. Estimated traffic down 40-65% per site in the same two-week window — synchronized, because the scheme was synchronized.
The tell any auditor can build: graph the referring domains and look for sites that link to each other in a ring with little external trust feeding in. A self-licking ecosystem is a single point of failure. Watch this space.
