Case: Customers using a partner-built integration expanded 2.4x faster — integration depth, not partner status, was the driver
A vendor with a technology-partner ecosystem (integrations built by ISV partners) examined whether having a partner integration installed predicted account health. The pattern was strong and the mechanism instructive.
Across the customer base:
— Accounts with at least one active partner integration expanded seats/spend 2.4x faster than those with none over 18 months.
— Each additional active integration correlated with stepwise lower churn, flattening after ~3 integrations.
— Accounts with 2+ integrations had 24-month retention roughly 30 points higher than zero-integration accounts.
The obvious causation trap: integrations are a symptom of engagement as much as a cause of it. Customers who bother to wire up integrations are already invested — the integration may be a marker of commitment rather than its source. This is the textbook 'switching-cost vs. engagement-signal' ambiguity.
The vendor's attempt to disentangle it: among accounts with similar baseline usage, those that adopted an integration in months 1–3 still outperformed matched non-adopters on expansion, suggesting the integration adds genuine switching cost beyond being a mere engagement flag. The effect persisted but shrank from 2.4x to roughly 1.6x in the matched comparison — still meaningful, with the gap between the two numbers being the selection effect made visible.
This fits the platform-ecosystem literature (the 'multi-tying' and switching-cost research) holding that embedded integrations raise the cost of leaving and that ecosystem density correlates with platform stickiness.
The trade-off: pushing integration adoption can front-load implementation friction and stall early customers who aren't ready.
Open questions: How much of the 2.4x is switching cost the integration creates versus the engagement it merely reveals? The matched-cohort 1.6x is the more defensible number.
