Volatility trackers: which weather station to trust
This week on the radar — comparing the three SERP volatility tools people quote during an update:
🔗 [Semrush Sensor] — broadest dataset, splits by category and country; best for confirming a move is real and not your niche alone.
🔗 [Mozcast] — desktop US-centric, tracks SERP feature shifts (more PAA, fewer images); read it for layout changes, not just rank churn.
🔗 [Advanced Web Rankings] — cleaner 90-day history; useful when you need to date the start of a rollout, not just the peak.
The tradeoff most people miss: each tool measures a different keyword pool, so a spike on one and calm on another usually means your category isn't affected, not that a tool is wrong. Cross-reference before you panic. Treat any single tracker as a thermometer, not a diagnosis.
One to bookmark: Semrush Sensor's category view — the fastest way to tell whether an update touched your vertical or someone else's.
