Myth: "Managed hosting keeps your stack current for you"
A host "managing" the stack auto-killed PHP 7.4 on its EOL date with 5 days' email notice. A legacy plugin broke, the site white-screened, and the same host that forced the change quoted $150 for a "compatibility fix" — selling the cure for the problem it created. "Managed" meant they controlled the timing, not that they handled the fallout. The customer pinned PHP elsewhere and patched the plugin in an afternoon for free.
Follow the money: a forced break you can pay them to fix is two revenue events in one.
Reality: "managed updates" can mean they break it on their schedule and bill you to unbreak it.
