The mistake: panicking over your lab score
Many people see a red Performance number in Lighthouse and assume Google is punishing them. But that's lab data — a single test run on a simulated phone in a data center. What actually affects ranking is field data: real numbers from real visitors over the last 28 days.
Think of lab data like a flight simulator, and field data like an actual flight log. The simulator helps you practice, but the log is what really happened.
How to check the right one:
— Open PageSpeed Insights and run your URL.
— Look at the top section: Discover what your real users are experiencing. That's field data.
— The lower section is lab data — great for debugging, but not your grade.
Try this: judge your page by the top section first. If it has no data yet, your page just needs more traffic.
