A retailer who couldn't cache pages because of one greeting line
A clothing site personalized every page with a 'Hi, Maria' header and a live cart count. Because those two fragments were baked into the HTML at origin, the entire page was uncacheable — every product view rendered fresh in Atlanta and traveled uncached to shoppers in Vancouver at 480ms TTFB.
Two dynamic strings were holding 99% static HTML hostage.
What we changed: split the page with edge-side composition. The static product HTML cached at the POP with a 1-hour TTL, while the greeting and cart count loaded as a tiny separate edge request stitched in at delivery. The big page cached; the small fragment stayed live.
Product-page TTFB in Vancouver dropped from 480ms to 38ms. The static shell hit the edge cache 95% of the time. Origin render load fell 79%, and the personalized line still showed the right name on every visit.
The number that mattered: product TTFB 480ms to 38ms.
