Crawler Validation (Screaming Frog) vs GSC Coverage: Two Different Truths
Both "validate" a sitemap. They answer different questions — run both.
Screaming Frog / Sitebulb (crawl the sitemap) tells you:
— Are these URLs technically sound right now? Status codes, canonicals, noindex, redirects, orphans.
— Fast, pre-submission, catches the URL that 301s or is noindexed.
GSC Sitemaps + Index Coverage tells you:
— Did Google accept the file, and how many of those URLs did it actually index?
— The only source for "submitted vs indexed" gap.
The rule:
— Validate with a crawler BEFORE submitting (catch broken URLs cheaply).
— Monitor with GSC AFTER submitting (catch indexing reality).
Pass/fail:
— ✅ Crawler: 100% of sitemap URLs are 200, self-canonical, indexable.
— ✅ GSC: indexed count tracks submitted count over weeks.
Definition of done: crawler clears the file, GSC confirms the index.
